Our Friends @ Home program matches local teenagers with a child who has special needs. These teenagers complete an application process, provide letters of recommendation, and are interviewed before they are paired with their “special friend” whom they will visit at home on a weekly basis. Often, these visits become the highlight of the children’s week as they excitedly look forward to the time spent in fun activities with their teen friend.
Before children with special needs and teen volunteers are paired, our Friends@Home Coordinator visits with each child and family to ensure safety and compatibility. In addition, the Coordinator contacts each family following the visits to receive feedback. Our “teen friends” participate in several coaching sessions throughout the year and have access to our activity library of games and ideas.
